Transitional Home Design

Long, Long Ago

(like 5 years ago)… So really not that long ago I would have considered myself a “Farmhouse” style type of person. I had buffalo checker everywhere, “HOME” signs in every corner of the house, and obviously galvanized metal. There is nothing wrong with this style, if you love it, embrace it!!!

About a year and a half ago I started to realize that I was sick of the farmhouse way and wanted to change my decor/style into something more modern, traditional, and timeless. I started my search on Pinterest and began to understand different types of design and was obsessing over the Transitional Design.

What is Transitional Design?

Transitional Design marries both modern and traditional elements together along you to create a space with depth, various textures, and monochromatic colors. It gives off sophisticated traditional elements in your space with a modern twist that keeps it all interesting! As I started to fine pieces that would match this, I noticed that my living room and kitchen began to feel peaceful. The monochromatic colors allowed me to keep things neutral so I could buy larger items (like a couch) that would stand the test of time. Whites, beiges, creams, etc. will never go out of style! I loved the idea of having modern and traditional mixed together since it gave me more freedom when it came to styling my rooms.

In our new house (that we are building right now, yay!!) I went with the transitional design mindset so I would have something that would stay consistent but also I wouldn’t get sick of immediately (I’m looking at you Gray tones).

Transitional Living Room Inspo

As I usually do, I went to Canva and began to mess around with what I want in my living room specifically. Here is what I landed on This is not a completed design, rather the main furniture I wanted to include:

Needless to say, I was obsessed with everything going on! This design is super versatile with two couches (and you can wash them #slipcovers!) where I can move things around if I get bored with it. The couches are from Crate and Barrel and we love them so far! Once we’ve had them longer I will do a full review of them, but seriously, do your research on couches. We’ve made some big mistakes buying furniture in the past that has cost us a lot of money. Of course I had to go with the barrel chairs from Target. They are super cute, but honestly they are not that comfortable…. we may use them in a different space and get higher end chairs when we move in to the new house.

One of the last “main” pieces on here is the adorable (and large!) coffee table. I recently discovered Living Spaces and I’m in love! They have a lot of great stuff on there that is totally worth looking at. I stumbled upon this coffee table because I wanted something that was going to fit the space well, which it totally does- it’s 60 in wide!!! The other side tables that you see are from World Market and Target. As you can tell, I wanted to mix a variety of colors, textures, and materials so I went with wood, marble, black, etc. Try NOT to be matchy matchy! I literally did this 10 years ago and my design has completely changed since then. If you have trouble doing this, reach out to me and I can help you with a Design Consultation.

Last, but not least…
